For better or worse we've become a "credentialized" society. Have you noticed how a lot of occupations have become "certified". I believe in education and I understand that unless you demonstrate your knowledge by having a degree and/or certification that you can't prove to someone in HR that you can do the job. But college isn't the only place to get education--there is on the job training (something a lot of employers are reluctant to do) and life experience. Unfortunately, many entry level jobs have gone away and employers are looking for experienced workers (i.e. someone you don't have to train). As an employer I've hired experienced workers that I've had to retrain. However some of my best people have come from other industries and had no experience in my field.
