On the safeties discussion I think Steve was trying to say that safeties are mechanical in nature, and being that, they will fail and cannot be relied upon 100%. As far as accidental discharge, unless weapon is dropped or jarred in someway, it is more than likely it is a case of operator headspace as we used to say in the army, and not much can deal with inattention, even mechanical safeties. When I was taught about guns at the ripe old age of 8 was treat every gun as if it were loaded and ready to fire and never chamber a round until you were ready to fire. This alone is more preventative than any amount of mechanical safeties or keeping your finger off the trigger would be. As far as the gunsmith having a bad day comment, first thing you do is unload the gun, kinda takes the safety out of the picture. Anyway, just my opinion. And it only takes less than a second to rack a slide or chamber a round.
